A military force formed from disaffected Czech and Slovak soldiers of the Austrian Army during World War I who gave themselves up to the tsarist army. They were originally intended for use on the Eastern Front against the Germans, but the October Revolution in Russia cut these plans short. An agreement was made with the Bolsheviks for safe passage to France via the Trans-Siberian and then from Vladivostok by ship.
